One North East supports the Sunderland 2018 bid
Regional development agency One North East has given its backing to Sunderland’s bid for host city status as part of the FA’s campaign to bring the World Cup to England in 2018. One North East is the organisation that is responsible for transforming North East England through sustainable economic development and one of the agency’s key roles involves promoting the region as a great place to live, work, study and visit. Tourism now contributes around £4bn to the North East economy every year and the benefits of bringing major events to the region are wide ranging and of huge value.
Margaret Fay, Chairman of One North East, said:
We welcome the bids of Sunderland and Newcastle to become host cities for the World Cup in 2018. The Stadium of Light and St James’ Park are both world class venues with experience of hosting major events. The passionate support of North East people will add real strength to the bids.
Both bids will be proposing facilities around the whole region, which would bring enormous economic benefit to the North East. I would urge everyone in the region to back England’s bid and get behind Sunderland and Newcastle bids by logging on to www.england2018bid.com to register their support.
The Sunderland 2018 bid was launched last week and involves facilities throughout the North East. The city is centrally located in the region, with excellent road and rail links, and is close to two international airports. The Sunderland team is working with partners from across Tyneside, County Durham, Tees Valley and Northumberland to ensure that the bid is a truly regional proposal.
